Inserted in the volcanic complex of Cinco Picos, this route travels along southeast slope of the island, passing through vestiges of maritime defense fortifications, dating from the 16th to 17th centuries, ending in the village of São Sebastião.
The route starts on the main road towards Ponta das Contendas, a Protected Area for the Management of Habitats or Species, with a lookout to the Lighthouse of Contendas and the Goat’s Islets. Descend in direction of Forte da Greta and Santa Catarina das Mós (1581), and then, the Fort of Bom Jesus (1644). The trail continues through a dirt road with access to the grazing fields and belvedere from which you can see the whole coastline of São Sebastião. Then the route goes up to the village of São Sebastião passing an old watermill, where formerly Ribeira do Frei João flowed. Once inside the village, pass by the chapel of Sant’Ana and Largo da Fonte. After the church you will see the main square, lace where the trail ends.
